Place-Names: Truth or Bluff?

A fun (and free!) place-name event, with Simon Taylor (University of Glasgow), is being held in Edinburgh on the 25th of this month. Details can be found at http://www.historyfest.co.uk/events/25 if you scroll down to 2pm.

Place-Names: Truth or Bluff?
Dome Facility, National Records of Scotland, New Register House, 3 West Register Street Edinburgh EH1 3YT
From Tillicoultry to Cowdrait, and from Fossoway to Haud Yauds, many Scottish place-names puzzle both residents and visitors. In this entertaining version of ‘Call My Bluff” you can pit your wits against place-name expert Dr Simon Taylor in guessing the true meanings and origins of place names from across Scotland. Discover the amazing overlay of Pictish, British, Gaelic, Norse, Scots and English names in places familiar and unfamiliar. Dr Simon Taylor of the University of Glasgow is author of The Place-Names of Fife (5 vols, 2006-2012). This event is linked to the exhibition in the National Records of Scotland marking the complete digitisation of the Ordnance Survey Name Books.
