A Tribute to Margaret Gelling.
Saturday 25 October 2014
Margaret Gelling, who died in 2009, is remembered for her contribution to the study of place-names. One of her major achievements was the decoding of the terms used by our Anglo-Saxon ancestors to describe the countryside. She also completed studies of the place-names of Oxfordshire and Berkshire for the English Place-Name Society, and contributed to the study of those of Shropshire. She collected information for the whole county and completed six of the ten volumes covering the whole county. The remainder of the county will be completed in a joint project by the Universities of Nottingham and Wales to use her data and complete the survey. Thanks to her efforts, Shropshire will soon join the ten English counties with complete coverage and detailed of their place-names, down to the level of field-names, by the English Place-Name Society.
The Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland (SNSBI) is organising a one-day meeting to remember Margaret and discuss her life and acheivements. In the morning there will be talks on various aspects of Margaret Gelling’s work, by people who worked with her. In the afternoon there will be talks on the Shropshire project itself, by people who are continuing Margaret’s work. It will be held on Saturday 25 October 2014 in the Gateway centre in Shrewsbury.
Attendance by ticket only and tickets (£15 including lunch) may be obtained from Susan Laflin (email [email protected]) or Julia Stanbridge (email [email protected]) .
