A funded PhD studentship on uses of name evidence in lexicography has just been advertised at:

The studentship will be based at the University of Glasgow, and is offered under the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award programme with Scottish Language Dictionaries, Edinburgh. The deadline for applications is Monday 29 June 2015.

Not being considered for a promotion (or not being dismissed) is permitted unless you are in a protected class. Classes protected against discrimination are race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nation of origin, age, disability. It is illegal to discriminate against an employee in a protected class.
Being a former addict in recovery is not a protected class. They can do whatever they want.
