The Scottish Place Name Society are using profits from sales of 'In the Beginning was the Name' (a selection of essays edited by Wilhelm Nicolaisen) to fund an annual student essay competition. This competition is in honour of Prof. Nicolaisen, the society's Honorary President. Entries should be around 5,000 words and be a piece of original work on any onomastic topic. Submissions should be emailed to the society's Convener, Carole Hough ([email protected]) by 31st December. There will be a prize of £75 for the best submission, and the winner will also be invited to give a paper at a future SPNS conference.
